The Montana Department of Livestock maintains a real-time online brand book covering more than 51,000 registered Montana livestock brands. The book is searchable by county, city, species, brand character, and location on animal — and it is updated continuously as brands are issued and transferred.

Important Use Restrictions
The MDOL brand book is a public record provided under Montana law. Two restrictions apply to its use:
- No mailing list use. Under MCA §2-6-108, any document provided by MDOL that includes private addresses may not be used as a mailing list. Doing so may constitute a misdemeanor.
- Not an official document. The online brand book is not a publication of the State of Montana and may not be used for official MDOL business or for brand verification in a court of law.
Need Bulk Data?
The online interface does not offer a bulk CSV export. Researchers who need the full dataset in structured form can submit a public records request to the MDOL Brands Enforcement Division (brands@mt.gov · 406-444-2045). Honest Cattle has used the FOIA process to obtain the 2023 brand-inspection movement records that underpin our research series — a similar request for the brand owner file is likely to be fulfilled.
