Gathering Cows and Calves for Shipping

Shipping & Logistics

Getting cattle to market efficiently is a critical part of ranch economics in Montana. The state’s vast distances, seasonal road conditions, and concentration of auction facilities in a few key locations mean that trucking logistics directly affect the bottom line for every cow-calf and stocker operation.

Major Livestock Market Facilities
  • Billings Livestock Commission — Montana’s largest sale barn, at the intersection of I-90 and I-94. Handles the majority of cattle volume from south-central Montana.
  • Public Auction Yards, Billings — Additional Billings-area facility handling feeder cattle and breeding stock.
  • Headwaters Livestock Auction, Three Forks — Serves the Gallatin Valley and upper Missouri headwaters region.
  • Western Livestock Auction, Missoula — Primary facility for western Montana operations.
Trucking Distances from Key Areas
  • Livingston (Park County) to Billings: ~115 miles, 2–2.5 hours via I-90
  • White Sulphur Springs (Meagher County) to Billings: ~150 miles, 2.5–3 hours via US-89 and US-12
  • Big Timber (Sweet Grass County) to Billings: ~80 miles, 1–1.5 hours via I-90
  • Livingston to Three Forks (Headwaters): ~85 miles, 1.5 hours via I-90
Seasonal Considerations

Fall shipping (September–November) is the peak season, when the majority of weaned calves and cull cows move to market. Road conditions on secondary highways and county roads can deteriorate rapidly with early snow. Operations in Meagher County face particular challenges with US-89 over Kings Hill Pass, which can close temporarily during winter storms.

Brand Inspection

All cattle leaving a premise in Montana require a brand inspection by the Montana Department of Livestock. For brand inspection data and trends, see Montana Brand Inspection Data.
